Frequently Asked Questions
When it comes to German Shepherd care, we’ve received questions from a variety of previous fosters and volunteers. Here, we answer those questions and provide you with information you’ll need to know before providing a temporarily.
If I foster, do I have to cover vet expenses?
Not at all! Our organization works with local vets, who provide the services at the expense of GSDRGA only - fosters are not responsible for paying vet bills.
What experience is needed to be a foster?
No experience is required, just a love for the breed and time to care for a dog! We have access to training resources so as to help you get accustomed to your foster experience.
German Shepherd experience is desired … many people do not realize what they are getting into when they foster or adopt a GSD. They are highly intelligent dogs that require training and plenty of exercise.
Where do these rescue dogs come from?
We rescue our dogs from local shelters and from previous owners who can no longer provide adequate care for their dog.
Do I have to purchase supplies as a foster?
Not at all! GSDRGA provides all supplies for fosters. We receive all sorts of accessories from local contributors. Want to see a list of our needed items? Click here to learn more.
Can I eventually adopt my foster dog?
Yes, you can! Many of our volunteers have done so - however, we require at least 6 months’ time before a foster can qualify for adoption.
How long does a dog stay in foster care?
The average time is between 2 and 4 weeks. If the dog is sick, it will stay in foster until our appointed veterinarian gives further permission - requiring up to 4 months if Heartworm treatment is needed.
